When most people start their fitness journey, they hear about the “If It Fits Your Macros” approach, or IIFYM for short. At first glance, it sounds like a dream come true: eat whatever you want as long as it fits into your daily calorie and macronutrient goals (proteins, carbs, and fats).
But while macros matter, they aren’t the whole story.
Let’s break down why focusing only on macronutrients could slow you down, harm your health, and leave you feeling worse, even if your physique looks fine.
The IIFYM method is based on this idea: as long as you hit your daily calorie target and macro ratios, you can technically eat whatever you want.
Example:
2,000 calories made up of Pop-Tarts, olive oil, and protein shakes
2,000 calories made up of lean meats, veggies, fruit, and rice
In theory, they’re the same.
But in practice? Totally different results.
Yes, calories are a unit of energy, and fat loss or gain depends on being in a calorie surplus or calorie deficit.
But food isn’t just energy, it’s information for your body.
When you get most of your calories from ultra-processed foods, you miss out on vital:
Micronutrients (vitamins and minerals)
Fiber (supports digestion and fullness)
Phytonutrients (antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds)
You might hit your macros, but you could:
Struggle with low energy or brain fog
Experience worse sleep and recovery
See poor gym performance
Develop long-term health issues despite looking “fit”
Your appearance isn’t always a reflection of your internal health. A ripped physique doesn’t mean your digestion, hormones, or cardiovascular system are in good shape.
In anime terms: It’s like having a powerful jutsu but no chakra control. Looks cool, but it will backfire when it matters most.
Instead of going all in on IIFYM with processed foods, try this approach:
80–85% of your diet: Whole, nutrient-dense foods:
Lean meats
Vegetables
Fruits
Whole grains
Healthy fats
15–20% of your diet: Foods you enjoy that might be more processed or “fun”
This way, you hit your macros and support your body with the nutrition it actually needs to thrive.
